First Friday Art Stroll

Wasburn Imports is an exotic store, that carries furniture from
Indonesia, India, China, Vietnam, Burma, Thailand, Laos and Bali. Each piece has a story to tell. They feature my artwork since last year, and it's a prefect match.
Every first Friday there is a event when all the shops of the antique district stay open.
I love being there and meeting new people. The atmosphere of the store is so relaxed and inviting. An event is becoming a sort of a tradition, with a decent amount of followers.

"Where I want to be"

Where I want to be
Acrylic painted fiber collage on burlap with wood beads and acrylic yarn

It was pretty challenging working on this size especially sewing the wood beads through the middle section of the piece.

My mother was born in East Croatian town of Djakovo. All my memories of my early childhood are tied to that area. I have spent every summer vacation there visiting my grandparents. Being artisans they're responsible for leading me on to my creative path. The little town was surrounded by wheat, sunflower, poppy fields. I remember running trough the fields, soaking the summer sun, listening to the songs of the busy bees.

Here is the link to the town website:

Love field

taste sorrow on my lips,

Take these tired cold hands
in your own,
warm and inviting,

Lead me from the
underground of my lost soul,
towards the gates
of divine love,

Cover my shoulders
with hopeful rays of belonging,

Wrap me in joyful words
flawing pure springs of happiness,

Lay me
down in fields of poppy,
caressing my body
with flowers of passion,

Love me...
Love me....
Love me...
Love me forever...

Free form peyote stitch necklace with free form freshwater pearls, jasper and seed beads

Sunday, May 24, 2009

Here are few of my pieces exploring fiddle head fern themes.
They were made on acrylic painted burlap with hand stitched acrylic yarns and wood beads.
Living in Florida, I miss Croatian forests, misty fresh mornings where we would go hiking to the mountain. Zagreb is placed under Sljeme mountain, and my husband and I were fortunate to live in the upper area of the outskirts of the city. From our house we needed roughly 2 1/2 hours to reach the top hiking. In the winter months, when deep snow would cover everything, very often the only way to go up would be with cable car. On the weekend the mountain would be crowded by skiers of all ages. Spring hikes were the most beautiful ones, misty and crisp. Shy spring flowers were showing up between left over patches of snow.
I wrote this poem bellow remembering those times.

"Spring poem"

Forest is awakening...

while I'm walking on the path
woven by morning mist,
my heart chants an ode
to spring happiness.
In every dew drop on tiny
cyclamen leaves,
I see my reflection
and that of
all the souls
that walked the same path
countless springs long ago,
breathing the same crisp freshness
of forest air,
eyes absorbing all the beauty
of these ancient trees,
listening to the music of the eternal
and everlasting

and a gushing, chilly spring whispering
the old forgotten tales...

"Night and day VII"

Black and white bib necklace, utilizing free form peyote stitch with fresh water pearls, mother of pearl button, vintage beads, glass beads and seed beads.
It's a fashion trend for summer 2009.
It can be worn with a simple black dress, or jeans and a black tunic. Or it can be worn with a white shirt, or a white linen dress. So many possibilities.

Photos of Croatia

Today I discovered very nice website dedicated to Croatia with huge collection of photos of Croatia.
I was born there, in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. I lived there till '92 when my husband and I moved to Florida. (I can't believe it's been 17 years already.)

This piece was made few months ago.
I started with stretched burlap, gesso, and yellow acrylic. While still wet, a layer of gauze fabric was applied with more acrylic paint over it. I stitched the yarn lines through. Fabric cut-outs were glued with acrylic gel medium. More stitching with cotton yarn. Finishing it with acrylic paint and charcoal.

"Rhapsody in Red"

That night
was rhapsody in red
starved for passion
awash in lust
in every way
in every cell of my body
in sweet sherry
mystified with smoke
of incense and cigarettes

and stuffed
in a drawer of memories

My recent interview for World Artisan Gems website:

"Found on the beach III"

My take on Spring 09 Jewelry Trend - The Bib Necklace!

It involved my favorite

I used shells, variety of glass beads, vintage beads and seed beads.

"Three tulips"
