Valentine and "Licitarsko srce"

Yesterday I got the idea to make little felted hearts, and I made seven of them.

The inspiration for my valentine hearts came from a traditional Croatian Gingerbread called Licitar. It is a colorfully decorated cookie made of honey dough.  It is made in various shapes and sizes, as well as in a heart shape ("Licitarsko srce"). The tradition in Croatia goes back to the 16th and 17th century. Licitars have been sold at fairs and festivals. I remember very well getting a Licitar heart as a present when I was a little girl living in Croatia.

Here is a great Croatian website that explains everything about it:
It is great to see that they're continuing to make this traditional product, and  preserve a part of Croatian heritage. It's a great little souvenir, and I know that I'm getting some on my next trip to Croatia. They're a wonderful decoration for a Christmas tree.

  1. I love these. Really so so super cute and I would love to wear them. I always thought licitarska srca had great branding apeal. :-)

  2. Thanks Maya! I might do a giveaway soon on my blog involving one of this hearts.

  3. i'm a bit confused are they from croatia or serbia?

  4. Their origin is in Eastern Alps and in XVI century tradition spread to Croatia. I don't know about Serbia, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have it too, as well as other neighboring countries.
