Easter 2012

I just finished a nice batch of naturally dyed Easter eggs, using turmeric, onion skins and beets to get three different colors. I didn't expect my beets dye to end up this pale but it's a nice contrast to the turmeric yellow and the beautiful browns from the onion skins.

And yes, I forgot to wear gloves while taking them out of the dye and now my hands and nails have this yellow tint that will probably take a few days to wash out.

  1. These are beautiful! What a nice idea and so refreshing among all the icky pastels. I can't imagine the beet color any darker, I like them the way they are. How long did the dye take to make?

    1. Actually the dark ones were dyed with onion skins, and the pale ones were dyed with beets. For some reason beet dye just didn't work. It was easy to make the dyes, just about half an hour of a slow simmering. Basically you put in the pot any ingredient used for color, a few cups of water and 2-3 tablespoons of vinegar.....
